I'm wondering if he didn't put on too much shellac. I don't use shellac, I use poly. But when I'm done I can't see it on there. If there's enough on there to actually make the surface slick I have a feeling it will also change the feel of the blade.

I always preach put as little on as possible while dampening the entire surface. When I'm done the blade seems barely damp for just a few seconds. Then you can't tell it's there.

Shellac may be different though.

I've heard some chinese top players shellac their wood blades real heavy to add speed.
