I belong to a club, although thankfully we don't have this problem yet. However, to rank ppl according to their ability without telling them outright that they belong in the lower class.. you could hold a club-only tournament to determine who goes where. Have a cut-off point ahead of time in rank where you split people into divisions.

Ranks
1
2
3
4

Anybody rank 2 or greater goes one day of the week, everybody else goes the other day.

If you wanted to be a little more equal about it. For example, if you group the ppl who don't know anything together with nobody who knows anything, it's going to be a huge mess with no direction. You could mix in a few good players who are good at coaching/teaching into the beginner division for that night.

Maybe even have a rotation each week of which good player gets to go into the lower division to teach the basics.

For 1 week,
Rank #1 goes with #3 and #4, the next week
rank #2 goes with #3 and #4..
and ranks #1 and #2 get their own night to play each other.

Another idea is to do this:

For example, ranks
1
2
3
4

1 and 3 go into one day of the week
2 and 4 go into the other.. So you could have equal amounts of good players and not so good players together in order for the not so good players to learn from the good players.

Just a few ideas, i'm sure you could be happy with one of those.
