I used to think that too. But a better player worked with me and got me to go to slow down a hair with an all wood.

I was using a darker center carbon which is an awesome dual geared blade with soft touch in close. I figured hey, if I can push and block with it good, why go to anything else?

Where it was hurting me was on counters vs strong loops. I got tentative and shortened my stroke instead of hitting through with power. More like a forehand semi-block. It's because I was avoiding that "high gear" unless I was in a frame of mind to kill the ball. As a result I was being tentative with my counters which in turn gave the topspin more time to grab.

In fact, I feel more confident now to take a bigger stroke. But it took me a long time to find a blade that was softer but still springy enough that I could snap into my pushes without loss of power.
