Mendo or Magna? (3)

Hello JohnW, You ask a tough question. I just came back to the tables after a four year hiatus from the game due to an injury. I played competatively in the USATT prior to the injury and I used Mendo (both sides) rubber on a Butterfly Clearfield blade. I began playing again two weeks ago and I bought Magna rubber (Like you, I was intrigued by the speed/spin/control ratings of Magna). Personally, I can't really tell all that much difference between the two but I may be comparing apples to oranges in that I played with Mendo back in the good old days of the 38mm ball and there are four years difference between when I played with Mendo and the Magna with which I am playing now. As rusty as my game is at present, I in no way consider Magna to be 'too much to handle' and I would attribute that to the new 40mm ball more than anything else. I think I liked the feel of Mendo over Magna but I am finding that I can block much better with Magna than with my Mendo (But this could have moreso to do with the 40mm ball than the rubber). I seemed to generate more spin with my loops using Mendo but, again, the ball! I think either would be a good buy. You stated that you have been away from the tables for 20 years and that you employ an aggressive all around style of play. Well, after a 20 year absence, then, I would think that you would concentrate at first on control so I wouldn't go with 2.5 sponge. However, if you want to be an agressive offensive player then I wouldn't go with the minimum sponge thickness either (1.5). Perhaps 2.0 thickness is what might suit you nicely or some combination (2.0 on forehand and 1.5 on backhand). 2.0 thickness should give you the ability to smack many winners yet allow you to maintain some modicum of control. For maximum control, however, one should go with the minimum sponge but speed is sacrificed. Hope this helps a little. Take care, Donald |
