If it's your house.... But seriously, if you play by standard ITTF tournament rules from the very beginning, you don't have to adapt to them later if you get good enough for formal competition. I, personally, play by whatever rules the people around me are comfortable with. A player's knowledge of ITTF vs "garage" rules is usually a good indication of his/her relative skill.
