For sealing you can use hairspray, but some said that you will have to re-do it again from time to time. If you want to do it only one time, you can use Polyurethane for wood which you can find at a hardware store.

To remove a rubber, just peel it diagonally, it does not matter whether you are using normal glue or speed glue, just do it gently and slowly. If it is a very old one, then it would not be easy to peel it, and you have to dab some solvent.
