According the Teaching and Leaning Ping Pong, you should hit the middle/side of the ball with side spin to create a slow and short curve.

I remember in Play Better Ping Pong video, they use Liu Guo Liang as example. He is not tall at all.

Another way, I believe it is harder, is to hit the ball with normal left push while the ball is raising, but withdraw the paddle right at the moment of contact to reduce all the spin. This is from both videos that I own.
