Thanks for the response bes, that's a lot of good information! I did notice that some of the better players at my club flick their wrist at the point of contact and I was trying to figure out what exactly they were doing (i.e., maybe that's the trick). But you're saying that's not really necessary.

Your note that in order to lift the ball the upward blade speed has to be greater than the surface speed of the ball (due to its rotation) makes sense. That's a good image to keep in mind.
