Carl,
I am able to generate a great amount of speed and spin with my backhand by bending at the waist, driving through the ball with a high follow through. I learned to hit a backhand (and forhand) loop by practicing with a robot. I am actually able to hit a much faster and spinnier backhand loop than by using my forehand. I believe the key was getting a machine and being able to practice the same stroke many times.
