my take on it is this:
fanned hand generates power forhand shot, but harder backhand shots unless you do RPB.

curled hand is great for rotating and close down the blade on backhand shots.

I played curled because this is how I used to play with chinese penhold, but I fanned out every now and than for a full-out forehand drive.
