The grip in tennis has evolved as it does in table tennis.

The table tennis grip changed in fairly recent years (70s-80s) when Seemiller and Boggan both created new playing styles along with a using a different grip. The advantage that their grip brought was neutralized however once the different color sponge rule took effect.

Both of these players were U.S. players that achieved world rankings using different grips that made them unique.

I equate their successes to Conners & Evert in tennis with the two handed grips.
