I am a penhold player and have been playing ping pong for more than 40 years. I have used both Japanese and Chinese rubbers. The big disadvantage of Japanese rubbers is that they are just so much more expensive. I tried several new butterfly rubbers and I hate them because they are too fast (I am more a defensive player and love to have controls with my rubber). I like the Spintech Dynasty but it is around $38 a piece. I usually use the Friendship 729 rubbers that I got from China. It is much cheaper but the quality is not always consistent. I think the best 729 rubber will be the Wang Ming type (Chinese rubber with Japanese sponge). Chinese sponge is usually orange color and the Japanese one is yellow color. You can get it on internet for about $14 a pc. I don't like Mendo, it is just too soft. Try it and see you like the Friendship 729 Wang Ming.
