Hallo Donald.
Would like to deal with your post on a point by point basis if I may.

1. My " ire is not stoked " as you so colourfully phrased it , by any discussion of table tennis and its many merits , although that does not disclude me from talking passionately about the game.

DONALD
Hello Hawk eyed. We share a common passion and I appreciate anyone who loves the sport of table tennis. I do think that one must be careful not to allow one's passion to obscure their cognitive faculties of discernment in the objective assessement of any given situation. This can lead to such things as condescension such as is exhibited in your next point.

2. I appreciate that you are American , and that you have degraded the English language in many ways , but I was not aware of the " American " spelling of the word tournament.

DONALD
I find this point to be rather petty and even prejudicial. Further, the fact that I incorrectly spelled the word "tournament" has nothing to do with the issue at hand, does it? As a matter of fact, such can be viewed more as a personal attack moreso than any kind of salient point germane to the topic at hand.

Yes, Hawk eyed, I am an American and the United States of America is simply where I happened to be born and reside. I do not sing the National Anthem every morning when I awake from slumber and I view America as being far from perfect. Insofar as table tennis is concerned, I look to Europe and Asia if I desire to see the state of the art and the finest players in the world. It matters very little to me if Kong Linghua resides in China or Vladamir Samsonov resides in Belarus - I can still marvel at their talent.

3. I have not seen either of the videos of which you write , although I'm sure they are worth watching , so it would be grossly unfair of me to comment upon them . However , the last tournament I watched in any depth was the 2002 Commonwealth Games , a tournament in which many of the worlds top players did not compete , but I can record that I saw no examples of any players " looking in wonderment " at their bats after they had misjudged a shot , and missed , for whatever reason .

DONALD
As stated in a previous post, the 2002 European Team Championship (Germany vs. Sweden) tape offered some of the most outstanding table tennis play that I have ever viewed and the problem did not seem to be nearly as acute as I witnessed in the 2001 World Cup tapes but the problem still occurred in several instances nonetheless (For instance; See Zoran Primorac vs. Kalinga Kreanga in the last three games of their semi-final match). The problem was nothing short of epidemic in the World Cup tapes and I could find nothing deviant with regards to the technique of their loop stroke when this occurred. My judgment concerning the latter is based primarily upon the many close-up, slow motion replays where the stroke could be analyzed upon closer inspection.

Now, why do you suppose the play from the elite was far superior in the 2002 tapes when compared to the play of the elite players in 2001? And why do you suppose the level of play in the 2001 tapes was far inferior to the play contained in any of the myriad of tapes I have which date back to the early 1990's? Now, what was different in 2001 than in the 1990's? It featured many of the exact same players making the exact same strokes they utilized before, yet, there was this huge problem in 2001. What could that possibly be, Hawk eyed? Is it any wonder the play improved in the 2002 tapes when the players had over one year to play with the new ball? Still, though, the problem was existent in Zagreb - just not nearly to the extent as in Italy, 2001.

Incidentally, the last week has offered me the opportunity to view some of the top 'new' players for the first time and I am highly impressed with players such as Timo Boll, Hakannson of Sweden, and Hieschler of Germany. I have a tape of an early Samsonov who lost his match to J.M. Saive and Samsonov today seems more fluid and powerful - simply outstanding.

4. I have no doubt that you can execute a forehand loop with supreme competence ,

DONALD
So it's not me. Thanks. You just lost the point. Of course, your remark could very well be laden with sarcasm which, if such is the case, would be more a negative reflection upon you than ought else.

HAEK EYED
but I do question your ability to define your mistakes , attribute them to others , and substantiate them with an increase in ball size.

DONALD
And upon what basis does this question reside? You haven't seen my stroke and therefore have no basis to charge me with improper technique.

I can define many mistakes which I happen to make in my play and will be the first to state that a particular stroke on a particlar point was poor in form or attributable to some other aspect such as positioning, poor choice of shot selection, etc. Likewise, I can also define when everything was quite according to orthodoxy.

You are certainly free to question my ability to define my own mistakes but don't be surprised if I do not accept you defining them for me especially when you are in complete ignorance with regards to my technique nor have you viewed the tapes where I made some observations.

Take care,
Donald
