Actually the main thing you need to do to improve your game beyond the basement level is to take lessons from an experienced coach.

My advice is to find a teacher, take some lessons, let them evaluate you, and then ask them what sort of equipment you should be looking at. That's a surefire way of going in the right direction. You can easily spend $500 trying out different blade and rubber combinations. Lessons will cost something but you'll save money on equipment that you buy and then decide you don't like.
