usually, if its just a normal tournment, meaning nothing fancy with umpires or anything, they don't call knuckleballs (thats what they call balls hit off the finger) illegal

and if they hit edge of the table, then its fine but if you are the guilty one, say sorry to be polite. It's considered mostly a fluke.
