Ben,
i'm a defender/ attacker kind of player(but mostly defensive).when encountering a heavy loop,it is not advisable to chop it close to the table; blocking it is more appropriate.You can control(chop it or loop it back) by adjusting yourself a little bit far from the table.However, moderate spinny loops can be chopped close to the table by adjusting or closing the racket a little bit while doing the chopping motion.For more versatile/tricky returns one should combine blocking/chopping/looping back counterattack to confuse the opponent;pure chopping only will only make you predictable and an easy opponent.
