I dont think long pips are all that great from a distance. From what I can tell, people chop with long pips closer to the table for an off/def game.

Long pips don't GENERATE much if any spin. So if you're playing off the table your ball will be dead by the time you hit it. If I were going to chop from a distance I would consider a chopping inverted like slice or pf4-1 where you could actually put your own spin on. Then you could mix in side-top lobs and fishes too. Ding song used 802 (a very spinny short pip) so he could put his own spin on.

Long pips are more for chop-blocks at mid distance. If your opponent isn't putting a lot of topspin on his loops, your chops won't be very effectie. Backing up will make it worse.
