I am a LP's player and have been for some time now. I think the reason for that, and this is based on my experienced, LP with sponge do have the capability to both defend and attack. With that said, that is the reason why I use LP with sponge. I have tried LP without sponge in the past and believe me, it truly limit your availabilty to attack, let alone smash the ball.
