Definately. Short pips are good at using incoming spin,whether from serves or topspins, even chopped balls can be looped back with the right short pips. Flat hitting is also easier as long as you have a good flat hit, the ball will go very straight without spin therefore making it harder for your opo to return without lifting it slightly. I have just changed back to normal sponge rubber after 5 years playing short pips on the backhand, I have found I have a lot less control now but the advantage is I can loop again. Also playing against players that aren't that attack minded sponge rubber gives me more options than pips. Pips are much better against strong opposition who are looping all the time.
