this depends.lots of people play pips out without sponge but generally on one side.I play everyday down at my work and one guy uses a hardbat it kind of works like pips out spin reversal and some knuckle balls but the major problem is lack of speed if you are a defensive type player you might be able to do ok but if you are any other i would suggest sponge
