lots of practice really,u can hit the ball hard even with pimples but it takes time to master it,u have to meet the ball in a different way like u was saying more of a downstroke, but u can also slice it a little bit more of a J-movement then u can achieve "some" spin to,but the timing is the most importent part to it.
