Schlager back on top

August 2002 Ranking List Update

ITTF Press Release

Lausanne, Switzerland, 1 August 2002. More than 2 years ago Werner SCHLAGER (AUT) was nr. 4 in the World – after excellent results in July the Austrian is now back on top, with only WANG Liqin (CHN), MA Lin (CHN) and Vladimir SAMSONOV (BLR) in front of him.

The Austrian can really look back on July with pride. He reached the semi-finals at the US Open and at the Brazil Open he took the singles title beating the Korean RYU Seung Min in the final – and SCHLAGER also took the doubles title together with compatriot Karl JINDRAK.

Other profiles from the Brazil Open made big steps forward. Young Dane Michael MAZE, who just came back after injury, reached the semi-finals in Brazil before he lost to SCHLAGER, and MAZE jumps from nr. 57 to 46.

Thomas KEINATH who is not even a member of the German national team chocked everybody in Sao Paolo, reaching the semi-finals beating among others the Korean star OH Sang Eun.

KEINATH is well rewarded on the World Ranking where he goes from nr. 94 to nr. 60.

On the Women’s World Ranking Chinese ZHANG Yining “took back” the 2nd place from Tamara BOROS (CRO) due to her US open title. LAU Sui Fei (HKG) moved into top 20 after reaching the final in Florida.

The two finalist from Brazil are also moving forward. The Brazilian title moves Aya UMEMURA (JPN) from nr. 28 to 22 and German Nicole STRUSE jumps from nr. 44 to nr. 30 in the World.
