I switched to Long pips about 7-8 months ago. As a 45+ year old player I found it helped me greatly with my game. I chose Grass D.Tecs OX and my game has improved greatly. Great for spin reversal, deception, service return, and ball placement. However, very difficult to hit agressive shots with it apart from hard pushes.
I use the OX on Harimoto ALC and love it.
Recently I also got the 0.5mm version and used it on a XIOM All-round S. Slightly less reversal but easier to hit backhand shots with it and surprise opponents.
I play close to the table so cannot speak for long distance defenders.
