Samba is a european topspin wood, usually used on the outer plies... i'm not sure but I think that it goes by another name as well, something people might be more familiar with, but i can't for the life of me remember what it is right now...

balsa is great for close to the table blocking and countering, but i never liked it for looping. best bet is to try as many paddles as you can from the people you play with, after you try that a few times you'll start to feel the differences and can check out the specifics from the manufacturers afterward.
