I use polyurethane, which is better than shellac, to varnish my blade. Since varnishing the blade would make the blade faster, I only varnish the handle, the edge around the blade, and about 1/4 inch of the blade surface around the edge and leave the rest of the 2 surfaces of the blade unvarnished. This way I don't change the speed of the blade or loose any control characteristic of the blade. Varnishing the handle, however, makes it splippery when wet. To counter this, I wrap the handle with this tennis racket handle wrapper. Beside making the blade looks good (it darkens and give deeper color to the wood), the only good thing about the varnish is it makes the wood around the edge and the handle impervious to water or the perspiration from my hand. |
