The expense has to do with marketing, primarily.

Now days there are some excellent chinese rubbers that play very much like the euro/jap rubbers. In fact, you can get all the same sponges under chinese these days. Lately the topsheets have become less sticky (if you want that) and thinner/lighter as well.

All depends on what you want to do with it.
