Soft: More dwell time (sinks into the rubber more, so the rubber has more area in contact with ball = more spin - usually found in Jap/euro rubbers with less tacky rubber than Chinese types) higher throw angle, slower more controlled play, more speed glue effect, harder to remove speed glue.

Hard: Opposite.
