In general the short pips (assumed over sponge) act like fast, not very spinny inverted.

When you receive (and block) heavy topspin, you have to close your blade, but not as much as with inverted. Your return will have topspin, but not as much as inverted. The opposite is true for backhand. Same theory for all spins.

Short pips play very "quick" at the table. Good short pip players seem to have the ball back to you almost immediately.

A good short pip blocker is a fabulous training tool for discovering and illuminating (over and over) the fact that you have a propensity to over swing... (I hear!)
