I think 3-4 feet is too far back for return of service. From there you'll have to take at least 2 steps to get to a short serve.

To read spin takes practice -- I struggle with it too. REALLY concentrate on how the blade leaves the ball. That should help. Sometimes you can see the spin on the ball (the label moving). This can help on low spin and no spin serves. Really spinny serves generally blur the label.
