How many of the top US players use chinese rubber? Probably not many. The Japanese rubbers are better in my opinion. A sheet of 999 Elite Ultima will last you a lot longer than a 729 sheet will, and it is a sticky rubber. Most of the Asian players at our local clubs use Japanese rubber, even the penholders. Though I have won some events at tournaments using 729 fx, and I have also lost to players using chinese rubber. My wife plays with Friendship super fx cost $5.00 a sheet at Zero Pong. And she does ok with it. So it comes down to personal preference and budget.
