Against an attacker, it's good to put a lot of backspin on except for the occasional trick flat push.

However, when someone tries to get you into a push war, sometimes you're feeding into them to try to out-spin them (personally I love it!) Sometimes you're better off pushing flat for angles. It's hard for them to push spin onto a flat ball without making mistakes.
