Hello Paul,

Volleys are not legal in table tennis and if you strike the ball prior to the ball landing on your side of the court then it constitutes a point for your opponent.

The rule is as follows: The Laws of Table Tennis State in Section 2:10 - A Point: "if his opponent obstructs the ball" (2.10.1.5).

So one receives a point if his opponent obstructs the ball. What, then, does it mean to "obstruct the ball"?

Under Definitions (Section 2.5), the Laws of Table Tennis state; "A player obstructs the ball if he, or anything he wears or carries, touches it in play when it is above or travelling towards the playing surface and has not passed beyond his end line, not having touched his court since last being struck by his opponent." (Section 2.5.8)

Therefore, to obstruct the ball by touching it prior to it landing on your side of the court constitutes a point for your opponent.

Take care,
Donald
