J-penhold players have a stiffer wrist due to their grip which makes it more difficult to generate spin. They also tend to have longer strokes so they tend to have a mid-distance looping game, rather than close-to-the-table hitting game.
You can use short pips on a J-penhold blade, but the top players who do (mostly Korean)tended to use a round head, hard blade like the Senkoh-5.
I switched to a Chinese penhold blade and grip so I can generate more spin on serves and have more reliable blocking.
