Many (most actually) rubbers are delicate. If you scuff the blade tip against the table, you'll tear up the topsheet. I still do this occasionally, but, when I was just starting to play seriously (semi), I did it a lot when trying to push low backspin balls when off balance.

Good news - even with nasty looking edges, the rubber will generally play fine. I hit more edge balls than most, but don't really expect much from mis-hits. If you hit the ball near the center of the blade, you'll have no worries...
