Fellow penholder your solution to the block, for me, is to roll my wrist downward and push with my thumb to create the angle I need. As for the BH loop do you play it traditionaly with the front side or do you have backside rubber? If you are a traditionalist what I do is let the ball drop below the surface of the table, I contact the ball in an uppward motion with an open face just below the center of the paddle making sure I follow through the shot.
