Painting a table (1)

Painting a table

I recently "inherited" an old family table. I sanded it down and need to paint and finish it. What is the recommended paint/coating to use to get the action off the table that it is supposed to have.

I painted it with a simple flat, acrylic paint but it had too much "grip" to it. English on the ball is way too exaggerated. While this is fun, I would like the table to act as it should. I applied a clear coating of some sort I had laying around and now it is too slick. So, I have hit the two extremes.

Can someone recommend a paint (or whatever) that I should use to get the best action off the table?

Thanks!
