Slovenian Open: New Generation Strikes Gold in Velenje

ITTF Press Release

China collected all four titles on offer on the final day of play, Saturday 22nd January 2011, at the Slovenian Open in Velenje.

Furthermore, it was the new generation of Chinese stars who struck gold; 21 year old XU Xin won the Men's Singles crown after 19 year old WU Yang had secured the Women's Singles title.

Both beat established members of the Chinese national team to gain success.

Seeded no.4, XU Xin overcame compatriot ZHANG Jike, the no.2 seed, at the penultimate stage of the Men's Singles event, before overcoming MA Lin, the reigning Olympic champion, in the final.

Similarly, WU Yang excelled. Seeded no.11, she ended the hopes of Germany's WU Jiaduo, the no.8 seed, in the semi-finals of the Women's Singles event before overcoming Li Xiaoxia, the no.4 seed and winner of the Women's Singles title at the 2010 Asian Games.

It was the second career ITTF Pro Tour Men's Singles title for XU Xin, the previous top prize being at the Salwa Cup Kuwait Open in 2010; as for WU Yang, the 2009 World Junior champion, it was her first.
