German Open: Wang Liqin the strongest

All-China Men's Singles final

ITTF Press Release

Bremen, Germany, 9 November 2003. With Timo BOLL hit by the flue and World Champion Werner SCHLAGER still struggling after his summer injury, the two best male players in the World at the moment, the Chinese WANG Liqin and MA Lin met in the final in the Men’s Singles at the Volkswagen German Open in Bremen.

They gave each other and the German crowd an impressive performance with WANG Liqin coming out on top. After the Men’s World Cup everybody agreed that MA Lin was the best player in the World, but in Bremen things did not work out for him.

WANG was faster and knew exactly how to keep the ball on the table, so that MA could not finish the rallies too soon – normally he kills the ball immediately after the service.

WANG took the lead 2-0 but MA came back to take the 3rd. However the MA Lin from the World Cup was not in Bremen on Sunday. He was not as fast and as determined as usual and WANG took the next two games to take home the title and the 15.000 winner’s prize money.
