I usually wait until the game is over (and hopefully I've won) to tell him his serve is illegal so I don't sound like sour grapes if he is winning points with it. Most of the time, players who throw spinny balls against their rubber to serve aren't able to serve otherwise, and the balls they serve aren't better than good serves from good players, just weird. In any case, I'll tolerate rules which allow illegal shots before I will tolerate house rules which deny me a legal shot.
