Defeats Italy's Tan Monfardini in tight final

FiTeT Press Release

Rumania is European Champion in Women Single in the European Table Tennis Championships in Courmayeur. Otilia Badescu,32 years-old, is the new European Champion, while the Italian Wenling Tan Monfardini got the silver medal among the tears. The Italian player really believed to win and so did the public, who supported her till the last point.

Tan played a good first set, winning it (11-8). Anyway Badescu immediately got the drawing point (11-6). The third set was better played by Badescu, since the Italian athlete of Chinese origin made too many mistakes (especially by backhand) letting the Rumanian, more self-confident, win 11-16.

Thanks to her coach’s advice during the timeout, Tan Monfardini could easily win the fourth set playing decisely better (11-7).

The match was not so beautiful, but tactical and quite nervous: very quick exchanges and balanced score. Thanks to two backhand attacks, Tan gained the fifth set:3-2 (11-7).

Wenling Tan Monfardini fought hard but Badescu plays very good: 5-1 and then 11-6 bringing the partial result to 3-3.

A very exciting and well balanced last set. Tan Monfardini is well supported by the Italian public, she exults at every point she made.
