40 mm ball rule
17 August, 1999
The ITTF committee has rejected the plan to increase the diameter to the table tennis ball from 38mm to 40mm. Eighty-four of the ITTF executive board voted in favour, 30 voted against, and so the 75% majority that was needed was not reached. In fact only 2 more votes in favour were needed. Many manufacturers were totally against the change in the size of the ball since there were already some other manufacturers who had already the technology to develop the new balls. ITTF proposed the change in order to make the ball more visible for TV Audiences and to make the game more attractive by decreasing the spin and speed of the ball during a rally.
