Duesseldorf are European Champions
4 April, 2000

The decision came already after round about 20 minutes: When Koji Matsushita downed world vice champion Ma Lin in the second final of the Liebherr European Champions League between Borussia Duesseldorf and SVS Niederoesterreich 21-18, 21-17, the first victory of the German record title holder in the most important competition in European table tennis perfect. After its 3-0 in Austria two weeks ago, Duesseldorf couldn´t be catched up by the guests anymore. The 2.000 fans in Duesseldorf´s hall cheered enthuasiastically, because this triumph means despite six victories in the European Club Cup of Champions before the greatest success of the Borussia at all.

After Matsushitas victory the Duesseldorf players let the Austrians no chance in the remaining but now meaningless matches. European champion Vladimir Samsonov beat Chinese born Qian Qianli 21-16, 21-13, before the Duesseldorf idol Joerg Rosskopf won 21-18, 21-11 over Kostadin Lengerov, who played instead of Niederoesterreich´s world´s number four Werner Schlager, who suffered from problems at his back and at his heart.

"I´m very proud", Duesseldorf´s coach Andreas Preuss told the people in the hall. "We were high motivated and wanted to win the final by winning the matches", he further said regarding the discussions about Ma Lin. Although the world´s number five has played in China against the rules for another club, the European governing body allowed the Chinese to play in the finals, too. By the results of the finals, Duesseldorf´s protest´s against this decision have no meaning anymore.

For Duesseldorf, who lost last year´s finals to French top club of Caen TTC, the success means the beginning of rebuilding a new team. Samsonov and Rosskopf will leave the club at the end of the season as like as Matsushita. "Winning the champions league is the greatest victory for players and clubs in Europe. We´re glad, that we have won this important title for the Borussia", Duesseldorf´s world´s number one Vladimir Samsonov said. At the same time, the Belarus promises full engagement for the the deciding phase in the German Bundesliga: "We have won the German cup and now the champions league, too. Now we want to win the treble with the German title, before saying goodbye."

A good performance in generally made the Liebherr European Champions League in their second season. Many spectators watching the duels between the best clubs of the continent proved the acceptance of this competition by the fans. For the future the organizers plan to enlarge the numer of participating teams and to change the modus lightly.

Further the sponsor Liebherr shows interest to continue his engagement for the champions league. And finally there are already talks with the pan european tv station EUROSPORT about further live coverage of the matches.

40mm Ball Rule Approved
24th February, 2000

The ITTF has decided to approve the enlargement of the table tennis ball from 38mm to 40mm. As argued in past issues of Mega Spin the rule was necessary to improve ball visibility and make the sport easier to learn. A larger ball is expected to slow down the game hence increasing the duration of rallies. However this would be advantageous to defensive players.

The rule would come into effect as of October 1st 2000 which means that the 38mm ball will be used for the Olympic games in Sydney.

If you would like to comment on this issue we invite you to post a message to our forum.

European Championships Results
Duesseldorf and Niederoesterreich moved to the finals

November 1999 - February 2000

Record european cup winner Borussia Duesseldorf from Germany and Austria´s SVS Niederoesterreich moved to the finals of the Liebherr European Champions League and will compete for the title on 20th of March and the 3rd of April. By this duel like in the European League for national squads teams from Germany and Austria reached the deciding stage.

On the sixth and last round of the preliminaries Duesseldorf and Niederoesterreich used their good positions as leaders of their groups and advanced to the finals by victories in their own. In group A the Austrians celebrated the necessarily success to secure the final berth by winning 3-1 at defending champion of France´s Caen TTC. After this neither Germany´s TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen nor Belgium´s Royal Villette Charleroi had any chance for becoming the final number one. So Ochsenhausen´s 1-3 defeat versus Charleroi had only almost statistical meaning.

The same happened in group B - but with a happy end for the German club. Duesseldorf defendend its leading position by winning 3-0 versus STK "Unirea" Uzdin, leaving Kalmar BTK without any possibility to take the first place already before their match at Levallois. So the Swedish team lost finally 2-3 in France.

But Kalmar´s second place was perfect before this too, so they qualified for the world league as like as Charleroi in group A. Niederoesterreich and Duesseldorf will start at the tournament in Asia too. Ochsenhausen and Levallois as the third ranked teams have to hope for the expected extension of the world league from eight to twelve clubs.

Also the relegation seems to be open. Formally Caen and Uzdin, both at the bottom of the tables, have to leave the Liebherr European Champions League. But Ochsenhausen as the lower ranked team of the two german clubs still must fear relegation, because of the promotion of the German champion of TTC Zugbrueke Grenzau. But as like as in the world league there is an extension planned for the Liebherr European Champions League too, so that there´s a possibility for three clubs out of one nation.

3.900 spectators in the last four matches of the preliminaries were again a good result, although there were two matches without meaning for the race to the finals. This number underlines the high standard of play in the Liebherr European Champions League.

In the finals Niederoesterreich will be the hosting club at the 20th of March in Austria. The winner will be determined on the 3rd of April in Duesseldorf.
