Adidas Table Guide

Frame Construction There are three factors that go into determining the quality of the table tennis top: Thickness, surface and materials used in the manufacturing process.

Thickness Most good Table Tennis tables use at least ¾” thick particle or High-Resin chipboard which is then painted and sealed to protect against moisture. The German brands pretty much all fall into that category, but beware of the cheaper Ping Pong/Table Tennis Tables that are made in Mexico and China. Those have only ½” or 5/8” tops and they tend to warp fairly easily. Also, you will find that the thinner tops will tend to have “dead spots” with poor consistency of bounce.

Surface Cheaper table tops will generally be spray painted in Green, Blue or Grey. Higher end tables will have an anti-glare UV protected surface and will be painted and sealed to make them more moisture-resistant. For outdoor table tops there are two methods: Some companies just put a clear-coat sealant over their wood particle board top, but that will not last forever. Moisture will eventually creep into the fibers and cause the surface to become irregular, affecting play. The best outdoor tabletops have a 6mm melamine laminate set within a 2” aluminum platform.

Manufacturing process Adidas Table Tennis tabletops are tested thoroughly for bounce quality. Using sophisticated equipment, adidas tested the bounce-height of each tabletop in over 1000 positions across the surface of the table to ensure a superior consistency of bounce as compared to other brands. All tabletops are encapsulated in a 2” aluminum edge for rigidity and strength.

Frame Construction/Durability One factor of frame quality is the diameter and thickness of the legs. But even more important is to have multiple, angled cross supports, which connect the base frame to the legs and the tabletop. Remember that kids tend to jump onto the table to retrieve balls. Again, this is one area where the German brands are superior to those other Ping Pong table brands found at discount and sporting goods stores.

Key Features to look for:

Folding mechanism Most Tables can be folded up on each side to allow for rollaway and for single player playback. Adidas Table Tennis has a Patented folding feature that allows users to quickly fold the table with the squeeze of a single grip. Other brands require the user to walk around all four sides of the table to loosen hand-tightening knobs prior to lifting up and locking each end of the table.

Playback Look for a table that allows you to fold-up one side while leaving the other side down. That way, you can practice alone and improve your game. Adidas tables have a minimal gap so that you can use the entire backboard surface without risk of hitting the ball into the gap.

Rollaway castors Simply put the larger diameter wheels tend to roll much better than the smaller wheels. Look for tables with 5” double wheels and sealed ball bearings if you will be folding and moving your table regularly.

Nets The best Net systems are permanently attached to the table. Most have the ability to adjust the height and tension of the net. Cheaper brands will have clamp-on nets.
